Oh, Judy Bloom. You knew us so well.
Remember Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret.? My friends and I devoured the book. It was the first book that really talked about womanhood. Something that no one talked about back then. We’d hide it under our beds and read it with flashlights. We’d giggle at slumber parties and couldn’t wait for that to be us.
Alicia and I just sat at dinner with our friend who had never heard of the book. Shocking to us. But full disclosure, she’s eight years younger than I so maybe Judy Bloom was out of style for the girls born in the 80s.
Nevertheless, we had a good laugh at the discussion of first periods, pads that came with belts and all the funny stories that came with those “coming of age” moments.
Today, women and girls are so much more open. I don’t have daughters, and frankly, I’m okay with that. I have my niece, Sam, Alicia’s daughter, Alexa, and Mary-Jo’s daughter, Reece, to spoil. But come time to explain the “curse” or the “wonderful” moment (depending on how you look at it) that one becomes a woman, I’m kind of glad that won’t fall on me.
My friend Wendy started an incredible company a few years ago called Period Packs. A company devoted to teaching girls about womanhood and making it “okay” to talk about and celebrated. Chief Maxi Wendy offers two care packages for young girls. The Original Period Pack is the perfect starter kit for any young woman, this kit provides thin maxi pads, liners, delicate feminine wipes from Sweet Spot Labs, a calendar to track her monthly cycle, the Period. book, choice of nail polish, nail polish remover, and a nail file. To satisfy chocolate cravings, Period Packs includes two packets of delicious PINK hot cocoa, and chocolate scented and flavored lip gloss (all the smell and flavor without the calories!). There is also a Tampon Period Pack.
What’s great about Wendy is she never does anything without reaching out to the community. Hence, she provides Pink Packs for girls in need believing that every girl should feel celebrated and embraced.
The first three people to LIKE Period Packs on Facebook and tell us in a comment below will get a free Period Pack for the young woman in your life.

My daughter is 9 and is exhibiting mood swings much like a preteen girl would. She has seen me using pantyliners and such, and I’ve explained a little bit about what happens each month. She is curious, but in the back of my mind I’m almost dreading having to tell her everything that comes along with your period… not to mention her responsibility as a young woman. To my husband and me, she’s still a little girl and we don’t want to overwhelm her; but at the same time we don’t want her going out into the world not knowing the mysteries of the period. What a great idea to share with everyone! Thank you!
I have a daughter but we nowhere near that age! I do however have a niece who is at “that” age. I try to help my sister whenever I can. I believe this will help seeing how our local school system isn’t allowed to talk about this tipic during sex ed.
